Conrad G. Leszkiewicz, PhD, PE, PG The dominant application of groundwater engineering is the provision of water supplies for municipalities, agriculture, and industries. Groundwater is the earths most abundant available fresh water source, exceeding that in all of the fresh surface water bodies on earth. With increasing demands for water from growing world populations, agriculture, and industry groundwater is becoming an even more important source of fresh water for society. Public groundwater supplies are vulnerable to a variety of contaminants including fuel spills, unauthorized dumping of waste materials, leachate from landfills, and urban development. This course (7 credits) is an introduction to processes affecting contaminant migration in groundwater toward the wellhead. It includes understanding how aquifers can become contaminated and familiarization with the basics of contaminant fate and transport in the aquifer as groundwater flows toward wells. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
