Natural channel design has become extremely popular amongst the stream restoration community. Natural channel design shifts the focus from the traditional engineering goal of maximizing conveyance, to creating a channel with long-term stability and ecological value. The understanding of fluvial geomorphology is critical to the success of Natural Channel Design projects. Streambank restoration requires a careful assessment of the problems at hand and evaluation of the activities needed to bring the channel back to dynamic equilibrium. This course provides an introduction to fluvial geomorphology and guidance for the application and design of streambank restoration using Natural Channel Design. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
