Robert P. Jackson, PE The significance of product lifecycle management (PLM) is definitely increasing, especially for companies in manufacturing, high technology, and service industries. In todays environment, PLM is an essential tool for coping with the challenges of more global competition and ever-shortening lifecycle time schedules. New, better and more flexible products must be introduced into markets more quickly, with better profits and with less labor content. By controlling the lifecycle of a product through PLM, this can be accomplished. There are many reasons for a make-sense, documented, fast, accurate, efficient, effective, well understood, minimally controlled, measured, process for data acquisition and control. Product Lifecycle Management provides the methodology for accomplishing all of these desired results. Various definitions of PLM have been given over the years but basically: Product Lifecycle Management is the process of managing the entire lifecycle of a product from white napkin inception, through engineering design and manufacturer, to service and disposal of manufactured products. PLM integrated people, data, processes and business systems and provides a product information backbone for companies and their enterprise. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
