Following the end of World War II America entered into a period of great prosperity. Although the suppy of oil and natural gas helped to expand the American economy, the United States was less than 70% self-sufficient for its own production. When the OPEC oil embargo was imposed in October of 1973, the American economy was severely disrupted. Fortunately, oil had been discovered in the North Slope of Alaska; what remained was the challenge to safely transport all that oil to the United States.That is when TAPS and Alyeska entered the picture.
