Tank foundation support has become increasingly challenging as more project sites are in geologic conditions that cannot provide adequate at-grade support for above-ground storage tanks. Rigid-type solutions composed of deep foundations are often chosen in these challenging conditions, increasing foundation costs and schedules. However, Ground Improvement (GI) support solutions have been used for more than 20 years to support tanks across the globe, coupling sophisticated design methods and proper field QA/QC to reduce costs, provide better schedules, and achieve the desired tank performance. This presentation will provide a background for understanding the available GI support options and a few case histories to showcase their use.
