Properties and Welding of Stainless Steels

Stainless steels are engineering materials capable of meeting a broad range of design criteria. They exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, strength at elevated temperature, toughness at cryogenic temperature, and favorable fabrication characteristics, and are selected for a wide range of consumer, commercial and industrial applications. Their utilization ranges from aggressive environments such as chemical processing industries to delicate handling of food and pharmaceuticals.

There are numerous welding processes including arc welding, electron beam welding, friction welding, laser welding, and resistance welding. This course will concentrate on arc welding which is the most common technique used to join stainless steels. The factors that affect the properties of the alloys once they are welded will be discussed and how to avoid common weld defects will be presented.

Although stainless steels are readily weldable, designers should recognize that they undergo changes during welding. It is therefore necessary to exercise certain degree of care to minimize or prevent any deleterious effects that may occur to preserve the same degree of corrosion resistance and strength in the weld zone that is inherent in the base materials.
