CNC Machining Technology

Jurandir Primo, PE

This course is a basic introduction for CNC Machining that is a process used in the manufacturing sector that involves the use of computers to control machine tools. Machine tools that can be controlled in this manner include the CNC center machines, electrical discharge machining, electrochemical machi-ning, electron beam machining, photochemical machining, ultrasonic machining, and so on.

There are many advantages in using CNC Machining. The process is more precise than manual machining, and can be repeated in exactly the same manner over and over again. Because of the precision possible, this process can produce complex shapes that would be almost impossible to achieve with manual machining. It is because of these qualities that these machines are used in jobs that need a high level of precision or very repetitive tasks.

A computer program is customized for an object and the machines are programmed specific for CNC machining language (called G-code) that essentially controls all features like feed rate, coordination, location and speeds. With CNC machining, the computer can control exact positioning and velocity.

Machining can be a business, a hobby, or both. The demand for machine tools and the human desire for firearms and artillery started the need for all type of machine tools. Lathes and boring machines for boring cannon barrels led the way. Soon after World War II, the numerical control (NC) machine was developed. After 1970, computers, new tools and materials were added to give even more flexibility to all types of machine tools and operations.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
