Heat Exchangers

Lawrence J. Marchetti, P.E.

In almost any nuclear, chemical, or mechanical system, heat must be transferred from one fluid to another. Heat exchangers are used to transfer heat from one fluid to another. A basic understanding of the mechanical components of a heat exchanger is essential to understanding how they function and operate.

This 2-hour course utilizes US Department of Energy training materials (DOE-HDBK-1018/1-93, Mechanical Science, Vol. 1, Module 2) to describe the purpose, construction, and principals of operation for each major type of heat exchanger: parallel flow, counter flow, and cross flow.

The course content is generic in nature. Specific information on a particular heat exchanger should be obtained directly from the manufacturer.

This course includes a True-False quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
