John C. Huang, Ph.D., PE A Geographic Information System (GIS) is designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, and manage data. It is an extension of cartography � the science of making maps � and allows users to visualize, analyze, and interpret data in an effective and efficient manner. Therefore, having a basic understanding of what GIS is and how it can be used will help engineers and surveyors expand their knowledge base and adapt to this rapidly changing information world. This course introduces students to the history of GIS development and the basic concepts behind GIS and map-making. In addition, students will learn some of the popular applications of GIS. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public.
