Warren T. Jones, Ph.D., PE This course provides an overview of technologies that are currently used or have potential for use in hybrid vehicles. In many ways the current interest in alternatives to the dominant single energy source gasoline engine is dj vu. A sketch of the early history of automotive power trains is outlined with reasons why the gasoline internal combustion engine (ICE) won this early race for dominance. Because of the enormous challenge of changing the supporting infrastructure for a completely different technology, the race this time is beginning with many transition forms consisting of the ICE in combination with non-polluting power generating systems. The wide varieties of hybrid system storage, power and fuel systems for power trains that are emerging are reviewed. The remarkable prospect of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology that would provide vehicle owner income in return for quick service high value electric services is discussed. Software simulation packages that can be used for design support and performance analysis as well as government initiatives are also discussed. References are given for those who wish to carry out more in-depth study. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
