Approximately 35% of all roads, or 1.42 million miles of roads in the United States, are unpaved. Many of these roads will remain unpaved due to very low traffic volume and/or lack of funds to adequately improve the subgrade and base before applying pavement layers. This course provides an overview of common construction and maintenance practices for gravel roads. It covers the requirements for proper shape of the cross section, good composition of surface materials, adequate drainage, and dust control/stabilization. It also discusses recent innovations in the gravel road maintenance and rehabilitation industry. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
