Road Diets

Vincent D. Reynolds, MBA, PE

Road diets are the conversion of four lane undivided roadways to a three lane section consisting of two through lanes and a center two way left turn lane. This reduction allows space along the roadway for implementing multi-modal facilities such as transit stops, bike lanes, sidewalks and multi-use trails.

The road diets are relatively inexpensive compared to other roadway improvements such as adding additional lanes through roadway widening. The road diets may simply consist of modifying the pavement markings. There are several advantages to using a road diet such as a reduction in rear end crashes, sideswipe crashes, vehicle delays, and reduction of bicycle and pedestrian crashes among others.

This course will describe the unique challenges to analyzing and implementing road diets. There are several case studies that will aid the student in understanding the advantages of implementing a road diet to the transportation network. This course material is based on the document Road Diet Informational Guide as published on the website of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
