Vincent D. Reynolds, MBA, PE The Highway Functional Classification is a means to identify the role of a roadway, and expectations for roadway design. A highway�s functional classification carries with it expectations of speed, capacity and relationship to existing and future land development. Functional classification is used by local governments and state department of transportations (DOTs) in order to determine eligibility for federal funds. This course Highway Functional Classification Concepts, Criteria and Procedures will cover the highway functional classification program. The relationship between functional classification roadway geometrics and capacity will be examined. The method to determine the highway functional classification will be discussed. Further functional classification concepts such as urban and rural planning will also be discussed. This course material is based on the document �Highway Functional Classification Concepts, Criteria and Procedures,� as published on the website of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
