The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was created by the United States Congress in 1971 as a federal agency in the Department of Labor. OSHA's mission is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
As we are aware, an emergency can occur in any workplace at any time. Employees potentially risk occupational exposures to fire, electricity, mechanical energy, and to hazardous substances including chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear materials during workplace emergencies. The appropriate response in a timely manner is critical to protect the health and/or life of affected employees. To assist in the pre-emergency planning and to ensure correct emergency response, OSHA has developed an expansive array of regulatory standards covering a variety of work activities and processes in various industries.
