A Review of Wetland Preservation and Restoration Techniques Following Natural Gas Pipeline Construction

H. Wayne Harper, PE

Transmission pipelines are the backbone of the natural gas system which consists of over 304,000 miles of pipe throughout the United States. It is not uncommon for a major pipeline project to cross hundreds or even thousands of wetlands along its route. To help protect these sensitive natural resources, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has regulated specific procedures for wetland preservation and restoration following natural gas pipeline construction. This course analyzes the effectiveness of these procedures in comparison with the following nine independent variables and offers recommendations for future improvements.

Research Independent Variables

  • Ecoregion of the country
  • Evidence of construction debris
  • Evidence of erosion
  • Re-establishment of pre-construction grades
  • Appropriate waterbar placement
  • Evidence of human disturbance
  • Wetland position in the landscape
  • Soil texture
  • Evidence of top soil mixing

  • This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
