Geographic Information System 101NY PLS

John C. Huang, Ph.D., PE

Originated from Canada in the 1960s, Geographic Information System (GIS) is a multi-faceted discipline that incorporates a variety of concepts and technologies. It is a powerful tool in decision-making, as it allows us to view, understand, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that have never been achieved before. To really understand the capabilities of GIS, you need to learn cartography, spatial and statistical analysis, database management, and programming. This course introduces students to the history of GIS development and the basic GIS concepts such as layers, data formats, and data analysis methods. In addition, students will learn some of the common applications of GIS and the popular GIS software.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
